Best Gas Mileage SUV

November 24th, 2009

There are three different classes being compact, mid-size, and full-size making up all of the SUVs on the streets and market. Through common knowledge, smaller and lighter vehicles get the best gas mileage SUV than heavier and bigger cars.

In the case of a compact SUV, the Toyota RAV4, stands out of the bunch in getting an average of 22 city miles per gallon and 28 on the freeway. While still a very clear winner, there are several runner ups that still get extremely close gas mileage in the Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot.

Next on the list is mid-size SUVs where it is a tight competition between two different models with the only difference being one extra mile to the gallon on the freeway. The winner in this contest is the Toyota Venza, with the Dodge Journey being only a few steps behind in being the best.

Lastly, the biggest class in comparison to the other two is the full-size SUVs. The reason for this is because there is a six-way tie between a variety of makes and models. All of these vehicles have an average of 17 miles per gallon city and 24 on the freeway.

Since there is no first or second place when it comes to gas mileage, the list goes as follows: Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Flex, Ford Taurus X, GMC Acadia, and the Saturn Outlook.

Considering that there is no distinctive best for achieving the highest miles per gallon in the full-size SUV category, nobody is a winner and that means there is no way to determine which SUV is better than the other based on the gas mileage alone. However, if you are looking at all categories of SUVs then the winner would be the compact Toyota RAV4 that beats out all of the competition.

SUV Gas Mileage

November 24th, 2009

As an environmentally friendly family man, who needs a big car to transport a large family for reasons varying from Sunday soccer games to cross country road trips a lot of research was necessary for me to choose my newest investment…..The SUV.

I never thought I would break down and buy one, as much as I hate spending a fortune on gas, as well as trying to do my part for the environment.

However, as I looked online and spoke with owners of some sport utility vehicles I found that not all SUVs had to be big gas guzzlers. While they may not get as good gas milage as the smaller, more compact cars, many SUVs can be somewhat cheap on gas (SUV gas mileage).

It is very cost effective to do research and pick a gas friendly SUV. If you drive 12000 miles a year and you have a sport utility vehicle that gets 15 MPG at $3 a gallon vs 30 MPG at $3 that is a difference of $1200!!

Hybrids are definitely the most gas efficient SUVs. Here is a list of my favorite non Hybrid non-gas guzzling SUVs.

The Toyota Rav4 gets 23 mpg
Jeep Compass gets 22
Subaru Forester gets 22

Those are all considered ’small’ SUVs

For larger gas efficient SUVs try looking at the

BMW X3 or Lexus RX. Both of these options are little more expensive but if you drive a lot of miles you would make up for the price over time.

Once again, if you are in need of a larger vehicle, but you want to help ‘do your part’ for the environment as well as save a lot of $ on gas take a look at the options listed above.

Thanks, and happy shopping!!
